Ireland Chapter Newsletter June | 2020 |
A message from the President, Jackie Glynn |
Welcome to the June Edition of the PMI Newsletter. As we emerge (carefully!) from lockdown, we begin to slip into some familiar routines. However, many elements of our lives are forever changed. When I reflect on the year to date, an old quote springs to mind "There are decades when nothing happens: then there are weeks when decades happen". I hope that you have weathered the storm and are perhaps feeling optimistic about the opportunities that great change can present. I know I am. |
Looking to the future, there is still time to partake in the "Requisite Agility: Exploring New Realities" event which kicked off in earnest yesterday. As you may have seen from LinkedIn and Chapter Comms, PMI are the Premiere Sponsor for this event and as such a special rate of $27 (reduced from $89) applies to our members. From now until 7th July you can join a daily "Exploration" session led by different thought leaders, and designed to co-create the new realities. Then from 8th - 10th July three "Activation Sessions" will take place to review findings from the Exploration sessions and begin to build a roadmap for the future. For the flat fee you can join as many sessions as you wish, or if the timing isn’t right, you can access recordings of the entire journey to listen at your leisure. Chapter members can register here. |
Webinar Series Highlights |
: |
Our Webinar Series is now drawing to a close while we take a short break for summer. The series so far has covered a range of topics aimed at enhancing both our technical and soft skills. Here is a quick look back at some of the highlights: |
Kicking us off, David O'Brien regaled us with real stories from his adventures in risk identification! We got a handy cheat slide on common risks and some novel identification tips. Gold plating anyone? In the midst of a Global Pandemic we had a very timely intro to Crisis Management, with Scott Carver. 17% of attendees had hands on experience managing crises….I wonder how that stat has moved?! Priya Patel taught us that the X-Factor for Digital Transformation comes from Design Thinking.
We had some serious fun with Peter Taylor, who underscored the importance of levity. Remember: A risk is something you smell: An issue is something you stand in! You asked for more focus on Agile, and David McCreery delivered. We particularly liked his idiom for simplicity – the art of maximising the amount not done! |
More recently UL sponsored an insightful webinar on learning and practicing project management. The Centre for Project Management at UL are fantastic long term sponsors of our Chapter, so thanks again to John and the Team at CPM, UL. Check out their two MSC programmes here – both fully accredited by PMI and one of which is fully online.
Still to come on the 25th June is a second webinar on Agile (From the Field!) and our final locally hosted webinar of the series, which will take place on the 29th June. We plan to end on a high and are delighted to welcome Furkan Karayel from Diversein.com, for a rather timely focus on the importance of Diversity and Inclusion in Project Management. Be sure to register for this webinar here. |
Tips from the Pros: Remote Teaming |
Around the world, Covid-19 pushed entire organisations from their ergonomically designed A rated spaces into households. This posed challenges, many of which have been overcome through the use of web enabled solutions.
As your Ireland Chapter committee, we are living in TEAMS. So we asked our friends at Microsoft to share the latest homeworking tips and tricks, particularly those tailored to Project Management, so we can all stay ahead of the curve.
ProjectfortheWeb is Microsoft's most recent offering for cloud-based work and project management. It provides simple, powerful work management capabilities for use by project Managers and Teams to manage projects of any size. It is simplified for ease of use and connected to O365 – so resource lists can be created from contacts and projectsset upin an instant. Check out the benefits for Teams and Project Managers here. For additional info on the MS Project suite you can sign up to an on-demand Webinar here.
To trial these solutions Microsoft moved whole sections of their workforce into remote working before most. So aside from sharing info on technical solutions, we also got some learnings for managing long term home working from the human perspective: Tidy like Mary Poppins: There has been ample advice on setting up a workspace...but no advice can manage the practical reality of homelife on display (read: children, pets, clutter or washing!) In this instance background blur is magic. Comms is king: It's no longer obvious when you are away from your desk. Communicate your working hours and manage expectations through status updates. Be inclusive: We cannot rely on visual cues to invite someone to speak. So encourage the use of the raised hand or chat function on calls. Alternatively in TEAMS, pending setup, calls can be recorded so invitees who didn't make it can stay in the loop. |
IMPORTANT UPDATE
Continued availability of the Online PMP® Exam
You can still take the PMP Exam online, from the comfort and safety of your home. Online proctoring and convenient scheduling options ensure the same standards of security you expect, but at times that work for you. If you have scheduled a test centre exam and would prefer to switch to online, you can do so. PMI will waive all rescheduling fees until Oct 2020.

STANDING FOR EQUALITY, JUSTICE AND INCLUSION
Jackie Fagan | Vice President
Recent events have brought home the reality of racial inequality and the effort still required to create a fairer more inclusive society. Our President and CEO Sinil Prashara, has made it very clear that "whilst racism and bigotry can indeed raise its ugly head anywhere, the world over – such hate will have no place at PMI".
Through Diversity, successful projects are delivered the world over. We will never lose sight of this fact and we will enhance our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion efforts accordingly. Project Managers are change makers and through our work we can embed fairness and equity in the systems, processes and projects we manage. So we ask you all to remember this when you go about your daily work. In the words of Ghandi "be the change you want to see".
To bring this ask to life we invite you to attend our upcoming webinar on the 29th June - "How to Build Engaged and Outperforming teams through the power of Belonging". This will be a masterclass from Furkan Karayel from Diversein.com. Register here.
